Description
Mark Donohue won the 1972 Indy 500 in his Sunoco McLaren. Starting from the front row he led 13 laps and crossed the finish line ahead of runner up Al Unser to claim his Indy 500 victory. Mark set a new track record averaging 162.962 mph for 500 miles. This record would stand for twelve years.
Mark competed in 5 Indy 500's and was the 1969 Rookie Of The Year. Mark Donohue and Roger Penske became one of the most successful owner-driver associations in the history of racing. Mark won Championships in U.S. Road Racing, Trans-Am Series, Can-Am Series, IROC, SCCA National and is probably best known as the driver of the Can-Am Killer Porshe 917-30
On August 19, 1975, Mark tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during practice for the F1 Austrian Grand Prix. Inducted into both the Motorsports Hall of Fame America, and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
